Requirements to Play DotA

In order to play DotA Allstars, you must have a copy of the Warcraft III: Frozen Throne expansion pack. Please ensure that you have the latest patch for Warcraft III: Frozen Throne as well. Finally, download the DotA map you wish to play.

Step 1: Installing DotA

The DotA .w3x map file should be placed in your Frozen Throne "Maps" folder. The common path for this folder is shown below:



Step 2: Time to play!

Start Warcraft III: Frozen Throne.



Single Player

It's highly recommended that you start out playing DotA AllStars in single player mode to get used to the gameplay and interface. At the Warcraft startup screen, choose "Single Player" and then "Custom Game." Browse around and find the location of your DotA AllStars map. Choose either the Sentinel or Scourge team, then press "Start" to play.

Multiplayer

Select either Battle.Net or LAN play. You will be able to join up to nine other players in a competitive online play. It's important to work together as a team. Each individual hero has its strengths and weaknesses, and lack of team cooperation can mean the difference between victory or defeat in online play.

AI Mode

AI mode can be played either in single player or multiplayer (yes, it works in multiplayer!). You need to have a DotA AI map in order to use the AI players. Each difficulty setting provides a different level of gameplay.

How to Play DotA AllStars

Your objective is to destroy the Tree of Life if you are Scourge or the Frozen Throne if you are Sentinel. Do not try and rack up the most hero kills. You need to work as a team because it doesn't matter if you have the most kills if you lose!

Killing Enemy Heroes
The best way to kill enemy heroes is to identify their weaknesses. There is no single all-powerful hero in DotA AllStars. You need to find your enemy's weakness and counter it. There is a lot of strategy to DotA. Check out the hero guides if you want to find out more about enemy heroes or your own heroes. Working as a team will ensure the best result. Remember, you can't have a full team of just one type (e.g. all warriors). You won't be able to counter the other team that way!

Gathering Gold
Gold should add up automatically. To gain more gold, you need to get the "last hit" on the creeps. This is called creeping/farming. If you do not get the last hit, you do not get the gold. You can also run into the forest and kill those creeps as well. Killing Roshan also gives nice bonus gold for the entire team.
